BANGKOK, 12 July 2018 – The United Nations Industrial Development Organization (UNIDO), the Ministry of Industry’s Office of Industrial Economics (OIE) and the Plastics Institute of Thailand organized a four-day workshop on industrial economic Big Data, which explored tools and indexes to monitor progress on Industry 4.0 in Thailand.

Delivered by UNIDO Statistician, Dong Guo, and other UNIDO experts, the workshop helped participants learn about the Competitive Industrial Performance (CIP) Index and allowed them to gain knowledge on how to extend the existing Thai Manufacturing Production Index to other industrial sectors. The workshop further informed participants about emerging data sources and the role of Big Data technology as well as about its impact on compiling official statistics. Furthermore, various data visualization and analytic methods to support data production and analysis were presented, and emphasized during the workshop. The workshop also allowed for exercises on how to compile and use composite indicators.

The workshop brought together participants from various agencies focusing on economic and industrial statistics and policies, including the National Economic and Social Development Board, the National Statistical Office, the Bank of Thailand, the Thailand Textile Institute, the Management Certification Institute of Thailand (MASCI), the Federation of Thai Industries, the Fiscal Policy Office, the Institute of Electronics and Electrics, and the National Food Institute. The Thai policymakers reiterated their strong interest in strengthening national capacities related to data analysis and to a transition from Manufacturing Production Index to Index of Industrial Production in order to link them with data innovation for indicators related to the Sustainable Development Goals.

The workshop, which took place from 9 to 12 July 2018, was organized within the framework of the 2018-2021 UNIDO-Thailand Strategic Cooperation Framework that was signed by Thai Minister of Industry Uttama Savayana and UNIDO Director General LI Yong on the margins of the 17th Session of the UNIDO General Conference in Vienna, Austria.
