The new president of the 70th session of the United Nations General Assembly, Denmark's Mogens Lykketoft, assumed his role today ahead of an historic year for the world's largest and most democratic political body.

Lykketoft presides over a pivotal year for the General Assembly, which is now celebrating its 70th anniversary. In two weeks, world leaders will adopt the most ambitious global development agenda in history, the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development. But the UN's credibility is also on the line as global crises arise, from refugee flows to climate change. The new PGA signaled strong support for urgent intergovernmental dialogue on these issues.
