“Six days of war turned into forty-six years of occupation,” said Richard Falk, his exasperation palpable as he addressed the Human Rights Council in Geneva. The UN Special Rapporteur on Palestine pulled no punches in his plea for greater respect for those suffering in occupied territories, languishing without any democratic power to improve their status.

When the 68th session of the United Nations General Assembly convenes this September, it will do so with a new President.

It is a sad reality of conflict that women, who are so often barred from the decisions involved in going to war, are usually victimized the most. Threatened with atrocities like mass rape and sexual exploitation, women are often left at the mercy of heavily armed and angry men, ready to harm them in an attempt to disrespect their men, or simply out of malice.
