Algeria Takes the Helm of the G-77
Mourad Medelci, Algeria’s Minister of Foreign Affairs assumed the chairmanship of the Group of 77 plus China in a ceremony at United Nations headquarters on Wednesday. Mr. Medelci accepted his position from outgoing chair Jorge Argüello at an event attended by U.N. Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon and President of the U.N. General Assembly Nassir Abdulaziz al-Nasser. Mr. Medelci declared that as Chair of the G-77, Algeria would focus attention on solving the problems that the global financial crisis has forced on the developing world, and ensuring economic stability. He also applauded the benefits of South-South Cooperation, and the positive impact that it can have on countries of the global South.
