High-level government officials, leaders from the business community and civil society, and world class entertainers and celebrities all came together at the Waldorf-Astoria Hotel in New York for the inaugural 2011 South-South Awards on September 19. Sponsored by South-South News, the Permanent Mission of Antigua and Barbuda to the United Nations, the International Telecommunication Union, and the UN Economic Commission for Africa, the South-South Awards recognized exceptional contributions to global health through the innovative use of information and communication technologies. The evening kicked off with a red carpet entrance, which led to performances by renowned artists like Kenny G, Don Hedler, and Roberta Flack. The ceremony was attended by over twenty heads of state and numerous other dignitaries, who came to show their support to the cause of the evening: digital health for digital development.
