Ban Ki-moon: Bangladesh a Showcase to the World
In his tour through South Asia and South-East Asia, beginning with a 3 day-visit
to Bangladesh on Sunday, November 13th, following with Thailand and Indonesia, UN
Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon said that the United Nations wants to use Bangladesh's
achievements in child and maternal health as a showcase to the world. Ban's stops
took him from Bangladesh's health research institutes in the capital, Dhaka to women's
community clinics and "courtyard meetings" located in remote parts of the nation.
Among its achievements, Bangladesh has boosted its health workforce, doubling the
number of babies who are born with the supervision of a skilled health worker. The
nation is also ensuring that all health centers in all sub-districts have a midwife
available at all times. The key objective of the visit was designed to showcase
the progress and leadership taken by these nations in advancing women’s and children’s
health in the context of the UN Chief’s 2010 initiative, known as “Every Woman Every
Child”.
