High Commissioner for Human Rights Navi Pillay travelled to Zimbabwe this week to discuss that nation’s upcoming elections. Zimbabwe, ruled for 36 years by reformer turned autocrat Robert Mugabe, was beset by controversy following its previous elections in 2008, when current Prime Minister and vocal Mugabe opponent Morgan Tsvangirai withdrew his bid for the presidency despite appearing to have defeated Mr. Mugabe.

A tragic milestone was met this week when the United Nations announced there are 1 million registered child refugees fleeing the violence in Syria.

As the United Nations convened the fourth open working group on ageing last week, member states and civil society groups gathered to discuss the challenges, priorities, and rights of one of the world’s most vulnerable groups: the elderly.
