High-level Meeting on ICT and Sustainable Urbanization & South-South News Asia-Pacific & The Asia-Pacific International Organization for South-South Cooperation: Global Business Economic Development Initiative.

United Nations ambassadors and representatives of the International Telecommunication Union (ITU), UNICEF, UN-Habitat, and the UN General Assembly converged in Hong Kong for a high-level meeting on the use of information and communication technologies (ICT) to build better, safer, and more sustainable cities. Participants shared their unique perspectives on how to ensure that the rapid urbanization transpiring throughout the world occurs sustainably, and advocated a strong commitment to the use of ICTs in the outcome document for the upcoming Rio+20 Conference on Sustainable Development. In addition to these talks, those present enjoyed a gala dinner marking the launching of the new Asia-Pacific office of South-South News, along with a tour of Phoenix TV, one of China's leading media outlets. Hong Kong, a city that prides itself on its technological acumen and serves as a shining example of the transformative power of ICTs, provided a fitting setting for this important event.

United Nations Ambassadors and agency heads met in Hong Kong on Monday to discuss the potential of information and communication technologies to contribute tosustainable urbanization. The high-level meeting, sponsored by the International Telecommunications Union, UN Habitat and South-South News, was an opportunity for representatives of some of the world's developing countries to discuss ICT issues within their states, and hear experts describe their experience on the issues.

GALA DINNER MARKS LAUNCH OF SOUTH-SOUTHNEWS ASIA-PACIFIC OFFICE

The city of Hong Kong set the stage for an opulent galadinner on Monday night, marking the launching point for the new South-South News Asia-Pacific Office, which will be based in HongKong and provide technical support for South-South News coverage. This new branch will facilitate South-South News's mission to provide world class news coverage on issues relating to the achievement of the UN's Millennium Development Goals, and sharing best practices forinternational development. At the dinner were 19 UN ambassadors andrepresentatives of several UN agencies, along with Li Gang, theDeputy Executive of China' Asia Office, and CY Leung, the Chief-Executive-elect of the city of Hong Kong.
